• Verizon has been made aware that a very small number - less than .001% - of certain Verizon internet hotspots (devices called “Verizon Ellipsis Jetpack MHS900L and MHS900LS”) used for distance learning have significantly overheated and caused heat related damage. Verizon and the device manufacturer are investigating the cause of those incidents and we are working with Verizon to provide options for exchanging your device if you so choose. More information about how to exchange your device will be provided as soon as it becomes available.  

    To help promote the safe operation of all devices, the manufacturer suggests the following best practices:

    • Use only approved charging cables, including the cable provided.
    • Unplug your device once it is fully charged. Devices should not be left plugged in continuously.
    • When not in use, power down your device.
    • Place your device on a flat, solid, and sturdy surface such as a floor or table.
    • Ensure your device is not covered for proper ventilation.
    • Keep devices near room temperature when in use.
    • Do not expose the units to extreme temperatures for extended periods of time.
    • Do not expose the unit or its battery to water or other liquids.
    • Do not drop the units and do not insert foreign objects into the battery or unit.

  • Family-friendly resources addressing the standards now available
     Information is now available onlinewhich provides information for parents and   families about what their children should be learning in school for the school year 2015-2016. The information incorporates the new South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics.
      
    Although the family-friendly standards for ELA and Mathematics are still under development, the SC Education Oversight Committee and the SC Department of Education have developed a brief information flyer to help students and families have a successful 2015-16 school year.
      
    The family-friendly standards for Science and Social Studies incorporate the most recent South Carolina Academic Standards for those subjects

    "Read Your Way to the Big Game" kits to arrive at schools by September 1
     
    In May, the SC Education Oversight Committee (EOC) announced today "Read Your Way to the Big Game," a partnership with the athletic departments of both the University of South Carolina and Clemson University to motivate and incentivize all public primary, elementary and middle school students in our state to read.
    Big Game Kits will be shipped this month to all primary, elementary, and middle schools and should arrive by September 1. The kits, which will be marked to the attention of the principal or school library media specialist, will contain instructions for a school contest coordinator, teacher letters, parent letters, student entry cards, bookmarks, and posters. If you would like to designate a contest coordinator for your school now, please send that person's name and contact information to Ms. Hope Johnson-Jones at hjones@eoc.sc.gov. Also, additional kit materials as well as a parent letter in Spanish can also be found online.
    All students who meet the six-book challenge and whose materials arrive before theNovember 11 contest deadline will be qualified to win four tickets to the Palmetto Bowl, the "big game" between the University of South Carolina and Clemson University football teams. Two students will be chosen at random to win four tickets each as well as pre-game passes to the historic match-up, which will take place at Williams Brice Stadium in Columbia on November 28, 2015. There will be two student winners; one for the University of South Carolina and one for Clemson University.
    Schools, classroom teachers and school library media specialists will also have the opportunity to participate in next school year's challenge. Two schools with at least 70 percent participation will be drawn at random to receive $2,000 for their school libraries. Also, five participating teachers will be chosen, each winning $500 for their classrooms. Finally, two teachers or school library media specialists who decorate bulletin boards, doors, or walls to promote the challenge will be entered to win $500 each for their classrooms or libraries.

    Student Reading Success Activity Guide available online
      

     

     

    The Student Reading Success Activity Guide, a guide designed for Student Success Teams (families, caregivers, tutors, teachers, etc.) working with young children, is available online. It is free to reproduce.

      
    The guide, which was distributed to all school district summer reading camps this summer as well as public libraries and community partners, is designed to provide simple strategies for adults working with students in Kindergarten through grade 3.

  • SCHOOL ID CARDS

    District ID cards ensure the safety and security of students and staff.  They also double as the school lunch account cards.  If a student loses his/her ID card, he/she can request a replacement card by contacting the school's secretary.  The cost to replace a card at Denmark-Olar Middle School and Denmark-Olar High School is $10.00.  For information regarding a replacement card at Denmark-Olar Elementary School,    contact the principal, Dr. L. Peeples.
